Based on true events, in a modest middle-class home in Alexandria, twenty-year-old Mai assumes the parental role for her little brother. Her mother is quarantined in her room due to a mysterious and highly infectious disease.
Whenever Mai delivers food to her mother’s room, she must wear a gas mask and never allows her brother to enter. They appear to be hiding her mother’s illness from the rest of the world, leaving Mai to bear the burden alone. As the days pass, Mai marks them off on the wall, counting down to a specific date whose significance she alone knows.
Meanwhile, her uncle repeatedly intrudes and knocks on their door, while Mai hides, threatening to take away their apartment and insisting on seeing her mother. As the countdown reaches its final day, which also happens to be Mai’s 21st birthday, she enters her mother’s room and reveals the terrifying secret she has been keeping from the world.
